東方的意義：中國文明的世界性精神
中國文明在形式上與西方文明對立，其實則與之一致，蓋文明為普世不二的進化取向，中國不可能發展文明而與異域文明背道而馳，此即中國文明具有世界性的精神。中國文明的精神主旨是人文主義，上進淑世是其責任感，但目的終竟不明，止於至善的要求使天人交戰的艱辛無所逃於天地之間，同時呈現人性的高貴與醜陋，悲情乃成中國文明的顯著格調，於是心態逃避退縮的假道學異說盛行不墜，益增正道追求者的困頓與領悟。總之，中國文明的最高境界與希臘古典精神相仿，其間差異則顯示中國為東方代表的特徵，這表示中國在近代的落後是其發覺世界文明真諦的必要經歷，因為中國文明與西方本質無殊，其困境必反映人類求道的癥結與答案。
