本书是2015年度国家社会科学基金教育学一般课题《以培养自律为宗旨的中小学生管理体系建构研究》（BEA150068）的结题成果。华中科技大学教育科学研究院刘长海教授综合运用文献研究、比较研究、调查研究等方法，在本书中对学生管理进行多视角透视，其紧紧围绕“自律”这个核心概念，系统研究了中小学生管理，提出了“教育性学生管理”理念，推动学生管理的模式创新，并探讨了如何使教育性学生管理落地，构建支持与惩戒相结合的学生管理体系这个问题。同时，他还主张营造全员育人的学生管理共同体，优化班规、班级文化、班会、德育课等具体学生管理要素。
