本书基于作者在北京外国语大学完成的博士论文修改而成，是教育部人文社科重点研究基地重大项目“高校英语教师教育与发展：理论与实践”（01JAZJD740010）的子课题之一，旨在倡议高校英语教师教育的核心是教师个人理论的培养和发展。倡议基于这样一个理论假设：教师的职业成长是一个“学习教书”的动态过程。这个过程的根本特点是教师个人理论的进行性演变，即教师个体历经一个“学习”的过程。通过一系列的学习活动，如作为外语学习者和教师的“学徒式”观摩，初始的、正规职前或在职教师培训/教育，以及在具体教学环境中的教学实践等建
构和发展了自己的外语教学个人理论。按照教师认知研究的思路，这些理论充当了教师课堂决策的参照系，指导教师的课堂实践。
张莲，2009 年获北京市高等教育教学成果一等奖，2013、2018 年获北京市高等教育教学成果二等奖，2016 年获北京外国语大学教师名师奖，2017 年获北京市高等学校教学名师奖，2019 年入选第四批国家 “万人计划” 教学名师，2023 年获国家级教育教学成果二等奖等。
